Eau des Délices: a fresh eau, between classic Cologne and the Garden of Delights

Bannière officiel du parfum Eau des d'élices du Jardin Retrouvé / s’inspire du célèbre tableau triptyque Le Jardin des Délices, réalisé par le peintre Jérôme Bosch en 1503

Eau des Délices is a Fresh Eau inspired by classic colognes, both invigorating, luminous, and soothing. It blends Italian lemon, bergamot, mandarin, petitgrain, and Brazilian orange with lavender, neroli, and a musky, mossy base, like a modern Cologne that awakens the body and calms the mind.

Created in 1982 by Yuri Gutsatz under the name Véritable Eau de Cologne, this citrusy and aromatic composition pays homage to the great Cologne tradition while adding a very personal touch of orange blossom and gentle warmth.

What does Eau des Délices smell like?

Eau des Délices opens with a burst of sparkling citrus: Italian lemon, bergamot, mandarin, and Brazilian orange, enhanced by verbena and petitgrain, adding a green, zesty, and slightly bitter note. This first impression recalls the invigorating freshness of grand hotel colognes, those generously applied after a shower.

In the heart, lavender, neroli, and clary sage bring a more aromatic and floral dimension, with a soft orange blossom that envelops the citrus like a veil of white light. The base, composed of moss, patchouli, vetiver, and Tonkin musk, extends the feeling of cleanliness and freshness while providing longevity and a subtle green-woody character, perfect for accompanying your day without overwhelming it.

The “Garden” of Delights, a source of inspiration

Eau des Délices is inspired by a garden… one that doesn’t exist in reality, but in a painting: the triptych The Garden of Delights by Hieronymus Bosch, painted around 1503 and kept at the Prado Museum in Madrid. This masterpiece, filled with strange creatures and enigmatic symbols, depicts a lush vegetal paradise, a world of pleasures and fragility, then hell.

Looking at the central panel, dedicated to the Garden of Delights, one can almost imagine the scents of citrus, orange blossom, greenery, and oak moss rising from this luxuriant landscape. Eau des Délices seeks to capture this suspended moment: an imaginary garden where one strolls among fruits, herbs, and clear waters, without ever tipping into excess.

Behind the Scenes: Yuri’s Fascination with Eau de Cologne

As a child in Saint Petersburg, Yuri was already using Eau de Cologne, making it a kind of Proustian memory for him. Later, as a perfumer, he became passionate about the history of perfumery, studying in particular Jean-Marie Farina’s Eau de Cologne, created in the 18th century.

At the time, in the 19th century, Cologne was the only fragrance “tolerated” in French high society in the morning: heavier perfumes were reserved for courtesans. It was known as “sent-bon,” generously splashed to wake up, refresh, and feel good. Yuri decided to give his own interpretation of this historic gesture by adding a touch of petitgrain and a deeper structure, creating with Eau des Délices a warm, versatile embrace that can be used both in the morning to wake up and in the evening to relax.

In 2017, Michel Gutsatz and Clara Feder, with perfumer Maxence Moutte, revived this Fresh Eau as part of the new collection, reminding that “every great perfume house should have a beautiful Eau de Cologne in its collection.”

Why Eau des Délices is different

  • A true Eau de Cologne… but with a twist: very faithful to the DNA of classic colognes, yet enriched with orange blossom, moss, and musk for added softness and longevity.
  • A wellness fragrance rather than direct seduction: designed as a daily companion, to feel clean, clear, and calm.
  • Subtle depth: the mossy-woody base gives more body than a purely volatile Cologne, making it more wearable as a signature scent.
  • A strong connection to perfumery history: a deliberate tribute to Jean-Marie Farina and the historical use of Cologne in French society.

Who is Eau des Délices for?

Eau des Délices is for anyone who loves fresh citrus, luminous colognes, and seeks an easy-to-wear fragrance that is non-intrusive yet has a real story. It’s an ideal choice for those who don’t like overly heavy or sweet perfumes but still want a refined signature.

  • If you enjoy classic Eau de Colognes but want a twist of orange blossom + musk.
  • If you’re looking for a unisex fragrance, pleasant in any situation (office, home, weekend).
  • If you want a “feel good” perfume for tough mornings or stressful days.

When to wear Eau des Délices?

Eau des Délices is perfect in the morning, as a refreshing splash after the shower, to start the day with energy and clarity. It is especially pleasant during hot summer days when you crave lightness, but its musky-woody base makes it entirely wearable year-round.

It effortlessly accompanies work, leisure moments, and travel, quickly becoming a habit: you wear it to feel clean, rested, and aligned, whether the sun is shining or not. It’s also a comforting fragrance when your spirits need a boost.

Eau des Délices in Your Home: the Pillow Mist

Eau des Délices is also available as a pillow mist, bringing its modern Cologne universe into a nighttime ritual. You can spray it on bedding, pillows, but also on a robe, a throw, a scarf, or the interior of your car.

In France, they say “la nuit porte conseil” (sleep on it): the Eau des Délices mist is designed to help make this transition gently, surrounding sleep with a bubble of soft freshness and serenity. It’s also perfect for layering: mist on textiles + Fresh Eau on the skin, for a citrus & neroli cocoon.

How to choose between the Fresh Eau and the Eau des Délices mist?

  • Eau de Parfum / Fresh Eau Eau des Délices: to wear the modern Cologne on the skin, as a light, luminous, and soothing daytime fragrance.
  • Eau des Délices Pillow Mist: to bring its universe into bedding and textiles, create a reassuring evening ritual, and extend the olfactory pleasure without overwhelming.

The 15 ml and mini spray formats are perfect for testing, traveling, or keeping this “sent-bon” in a bag, while the 50 ml easily becomes a bathroom staple.

What people say about wearing Eau des Délices

Enthusiasts describe Eau des Délices as a classic Cologne “with something extra”: a twist of orange blossom and a more present base, making it more enveloping than most very volatile eaux. Many speak of childhood memories: picnics in the grass, vacations by the Mediterranean, fresh sheets drying in the sun.

It is often perceived as a wellness fragrance rather than a seduction perfume, a daily companion sprayed as much for oneself as for others, suitable for both very young skin and those accustomed to more crafted fragrances.

FAQ

What exactly does Eau des Délices smell like?

Eau des Délices smells like a classic Eau de Cologne: bergamot, lemon, mandarin, orange, petitgrain, verbena… with a beautiful orange blossom at the heart, and a mossy, woody, musky base that provides longevity. The overall impression is fresh, luminous, clean, and soft.

Is Eau des Délices a unisex fragrance?

Yes, absolutely. Colognes are historically unisex, and Eau des Délices is no exception: it suits all genders, all ages, and can easily become a “shared” fragrance in a household.

Does Eau des Délices help you feel better or lighter?

Its citrusy-aromatic profile, very fresh and luminous, is naturally associated with feelings of alertness, clarity, and well-being. It’s an excellent choice for tough mornings, hot days, or stressful periods.

As a Fresh Eau / Cologne, it is more volatile than a highly concentrated eau de parfum, but its musky, mossy, and woody base gives it longer-lasting wear than a traditional simple Eau de Cologne. It is designed to be reapplied generously if desired.

No, the composition follows the Maison’s clean beauty principles: organic alcohol, no added colorants, no preservatives, no UV filter, while maintaining the high-quality standards expected from a fine perfumery house.
