Our story begins in 1975 with a visionary named Yuri Gutsatz, who was not just a perfumer, but a man who dared to challenge an entire industry. At a time when fashion houses were taking credit for anonymous perfumers, Yuri was about to launch a bombshell that would resonate for decades.
In 1979, before the prestigious French Society of Perfumers, Yuri delivered a speech that shook the perfume world: « Perfumer, your name is nobody ». He denounced the hypocrisy: how can an industry built on olfactory creation refuse to name its creators, the perfumers?
This was not just a speech, but a manifesto that would give birth to an entire movement: niche perfumery!
But Yuri’s rebellion did not stop there. In 1976, he was already dreaming of an unprecedented project: a conservatory dedicated to perfume.
This bold idea would finally come to life in 1990 under the name Osmothèque, International Perfume Conservatory, co-founded with legendary perfumers Jean-Claude Ellena and Jean Kerleo.
Imagine this: preserving the olfactory heritage of humanity, one precious formula at a time.
Fast forward to 2017: Clara and Michel were not just reviving a brand, they were bringing a revolution back to life.
Our first act of rebellion? Le Nécessaire, an eco-designed set that dared to ask the following question: « What if luxury could be sustainable? » This was not a perfume launch like any other. Imagine aluminium containers, glass funnels and refillable bottles at a time when the industry was obsessed with single-use glamour.
The world was not ready. It was a resounding failure. But here is the beautiful twist: this failure taught us a lesson, and from its ashes was born the 15 ml Petit Flacon format, now highly appreciated.
In 2018, we took another unprecedented step in the industry: refundable samples. While our competitors were jealously guarding their precious drops, Le Jardin Retrouvé was saying: « Try before you buy, we believe in our creations. »
Then came 2021, the year everything changed for Le Jardin Retrouvé. While the world was grappling with a pandemic, we launched our most ambitious project to date: Road to Clean.
This is where Maxence Moutte, the hero of this particular odyssey, enters the stage.
His mission? To transform every historical formula into a clean beauty masterpiece while preserving its olfactory perfection.
Imagine the pressure: reformulating decades of artistry without losing a single note of magic. The challenges were immense. When Lyral was banned, Maxence found an alternative at Givaudan R&D. When galaxolide proved to be non-biodegradable, he created a blend of environmentally friendly synthetic musks that preserved those beloved soft, powdery notes.
Through 17 trials on Sandalwood Sacré alone, Maxence proved that conscious beauty does not mean compromise. Each reformulation was a love letter to Yuri’s original vision, ensuring that when customers opened their bottle, they smelled the original formula and not a pale imitation.
Customer attachment to perfumes begins with recognizing the scent, not with “my perfume smells different!”. Customer attachment to brands begins with trust.
While others were talking about sustainability, Le Jardin Retrouvé was taking action. Our 2021 porcelain diffuser with porous stems is fully reusable and uses 92% diffusion liquid of natural origin, our scented candles use plant-based wax in beautiful reusable porcelain jars, and we use organic wheat alcohol that helps protect aquatic life.
But perhaps our most radical action has been transparency itself.
In a sector built on secrecy, in 2023 we began listing all the actual key ingredients (natural and synthetic, explaining their use and role) on our website. No more allergen lists that tell customers nothing about the real formulas and lead them to believe that INCI lists are true ingredient lists.
Goodbye confusion.
The year 2022 brought an unexpected gift: Givaudan’s patents on mood-enhancing fragrances.
Overnight, two of Yuri’s creations from the 1970s, Sandalwood Sacré (WELLBEING) and Cuir de Russie (SLEEP QUALITY), were scientifically proven to improve human mood.
In 2024 and 2025, the four new creations by Maxence Moutte – Mousse Arashiyama (ENERGY), Osmanthe Liu Yuan (JOY), Violette Kew (WELLBEING) and Immortelle Babylone – all received “mood-boosting” certification.
The bold decision? To turn ALL fragrances into mood-boosters by 2026.
