Immortelle Babylone: a niche oriental fragrance with immortelle, between heritage and hanging gardens

IMMORTELLE BABYLONE, IMMORTEL FLOWER BANNER

The first fragrance in the history of perfumery, composed by four hands across time.

Immortelle Babylone is a spicy oriental Eau de Parfum, opulent and enveloping, designed as an elixir where a vanilla liqueur blends with the spicy warmth of immortelle flower. The liquorous, balsamic, spicy, and woody notes intertwine to evoke the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, a mythical, lush garden that seems almost timeless.

It is also a first in the history of perfumery: a fragrance composed by four hands, across eras, based on the last creation left by the founder Yuri Gutsatz and reinvented by the house perfumer Maxence Moutte to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Le Jardin Retrouvé.

What does Immortelle Babylone smell like?

Immortelle Babylone opens with a fresh, textured blend: bergamot brings a luminous brightness, while pepper and Akigalawood offer a spicy, woody, slightly pungent facet, setting the stage for a modern oriental fragrance.

At the heart, immortelle becomes the focal point of the scent: honeyed, herbaceous, slightly spicy, with hints of warm hay, blond tobacco, and even mild curry. Cinnamon leaves add a spicy warmth, and Georgywood provides a contemporary woody depth. In the base, vanilla takes on the feel of a sweet liqueur, enveloped by vetiver, labdanum, and cashmeran, creating a resinous, earthy, and caressing foundation. The result is a dense yet refined amber-oriental, more spiritual than sweet.

The Universe: A Mythical Garden for the Soul

The universe of Immortelle Babylone is that of a secret oasis in a fragile world: a hanging garden built by a love-struck king for his queen, with one singular purpose: to achieve eternity. In this garden rests an immortal Love, and anyone can come to encounter the sacred spark that has existed within them forever.

Wearing Immortelle Babylone is to step into this legend: to embark on an inner quest, to be enveloped by opulent, spicy, woody, and balsamic scents, accompanied by immortelle, cinnamon leaves, vanilla, and vetiver, like an invisible shield against the turmoil of the world.

Behind the Scenes: A Four-Handed Fragrance, Beyond Time

Just before his passing in 2005, Yuri Gutsatz left a small, unlabeled bottle in the Maison's refrigerator: a mysterious, slightly liqueur-like fragrance, something different. Clara Feder, intrigued, smelled it and wished to bring it back to life... but time passed.

In mid-2024, as Michel and Clara were reflecting on the 50th anniversary of the brand founded by Michel’s parents, this small bottle came back to their minds. Maxence Moutte, the house perfumer, immersed himself in the base created by Yuri, centered around a spiced liqueur accord. He began to interpret it in his own way, respecting Yuri's intuition while giving it a new shape. One night, Clara dreamed of the spiritual power of this fragrance, of its "place" – the Gardens of Babylon – and its image. The rest, now, belongs to the story of those who wear it.

Immortelle Babylone thus became the first fragrance in the history of the House (and one of the very rare ones in perfumery) to be truly conceived as a dialogue between two perfumers from different generations, united by the same House.

Maxence Moutte and Le Jardin Retrouvé

Since Michel and Clara took over Le Jardin Retrouvé in 2017, Maxence has played a key role:

  • First, by making Yuri's formulas compatible with IFRA standards,
  • Then, in 2021, by adapting them to a Clean charter (90 to 99% natural origin ingredients).

No one knows Yuri's olfactory universe and vocabulary better than Maxence. In 2021, he signed his first creation for the House, Mousse Arashiyama, followed by Osmanthe Liu Yuan in 2023, Violette Kew in 2024, and Immortelle Babylone in 2025.

All of his creations are designed with the utmost respect for Yuri's style, while integrating the advances of science and new ingredients of the 21st century. With Immortelle Babylone, this continuity takes on an almost symbolic dimension: it is the most explicit passing of the torch between the two perfumers.

The Immortelle Flower: A Solar and Healing Treasure

One of the key elements of Immortelle Babylone is *Helichrysum italicum* – the immortelle flower or eternal flower. This small golden flower, which does not wither even when dried, is a symbol of eternity and resilience.

It grows in the sun-drenched landscapes of the Mediterranean basin: the rocky cliffs of Corsica, the wild terrains of Sardinia, Greece, where it withstands a dry, arid climate, scorched by the sun and swept by salty air. This environmental stress concentrates its aromatic compounds, making it an exceptional material for perfumers.

Its scent is rich and complex: honeyed, herbaceous, slightly spicy, with hints of dry hay, curry, and sometimes blond tobacco. It blends particularly well with woody, amber, and spicy notes, warming them with a solar glow. It evokes past summers, sun-heated skin, the dry air of Mediterranean landscapes, and gives perfumes an emotional depth, almost nostalgic.

Beyond perfumery, immortelle is also widely used in skincare for its anti-inflammatory, regenerative, and healing properties: from ancient Greece to modern treatments, its oil is used to soothe scars, calm, and restore radiance to the skin. It is a flower that, symbolically, heals as much as it perfumes.

Why is Immortelle Babylone Different?

  • A four-handed composition: Built on a base by Yuri, completed by Maxence, it literally embodies the dialogue between two eras.
  • A central immortelle, but refined: Present in all its honeyed/spicy/slightly curry richness, without becoming caricatured, thanks to the balance of vanilla – woods – vetiver.
  • A true “Soul Healer”: Beyond the olfactory pleasure, the fragrance is designed as a cocoon of comfort, depth, and protection, validated by a Mood Booster Wellbeing certification.
  • A contemporary spicy oriental: Neither overly sweet orientalism nor dusty amber, but a textured, woody-balsamic elixir, long-lasting (or rather, on the skin).

Who is Immortelle Babylone for?

Immortelle Babylone is for those who love:

  • Sophisticated amber/oriental fragrances,
  • Warm spices (cinnamon, pepper, akigalawood),
  • Honeyed, balsamic, woody notes,
  • Creations full of history and symbolism.

It is an ideal fragrance for lovers of immortelle, noble vanilla, warm woods, and perfumes that tell something intimate and spiritual, rather than just leaving a “nice trail.”

Immortelle Babylone in the House’s Collection

Immortelle Babylone joins the family of woody / leathery / amber fragrances, standing alongside other strong signatures like Oriental Sans Souci. The woody / leathery / amber discovery sets, as well as the 13 fragrance set, offer the opportunity to experience it alongside other iconic creations and understand its place in the constellation of Le Jardin Retrouvé.

The visual universe surrounding it – the result of collaboration between Clara Feder (Creative Direction) and artist Kaya Bagamaz – extends this "out-of-this-world" aspect, with a bold, mythical illustration that reflects the narrative of the fragrance.

When to Wear Immortelle Babylone?

Immortelle Babylone is at its peak in autumn and winter, during elegant evenings and dinners, when you want a warm, enveloping, and slightly mystical aura. It can also be worn during the day in a lighter dose, as a “magical protection” against a hectic world.

It is a perfect fragrance for:

  • Autumn or winter dinners,
  • Dressy events where you want to make a deep impression,
  • Introspective moments (reading, meditation, creation),
  • Or to start the day with the feeling of being accompanied, “held” by something greater.

What Those Who Wear Immortelle Babylone Say

The first feedback highlights a deep, caressing amber fragrance, with luxurious immortelle and a liqueur-like vanilla that creates a warm, enveloping impression. There’s a successful combination of spices, woods, and honeyed nuances, without being overly heavy.

Many find it has an almost ritualistic dimension: a fragrance to slip into like a soft armor, a “coat for the soul” to face the day or prepare for an important evening. The nickname “The Soul Healer” particularly resonates with those who seek a fragrance as much for what it makes them feel as for what it smells like.

FAQ

What does Immortelle Babylone smell like exactly?

Immortelle Babylone smells like an opulent amber oriental: a fresh, peppery, woody opening (bergamot, pepper, Akigalawood), a heart of immortelle and spicy cinnamon leaves, and a base of liqueur-like vanilla, vetiver, labdanum, and cashmeran. Together, they form a warm, honeyed, balsamic, spicy, and woody elixir.

Is Immortelle Babylone a unisex fragrance?

Yes. Although its amber-spicy structure may remind some of historical orientals, it is designed to be worn by anyone who enjoys rich, enveloping fragrances, regardless of gender.

What makes it a "Soul Healer"?

Its composition, built around immortelle, vanilla, woods, and resins, creates a warm and comforting sensory cocoon. The fragrance has earned a Mood Booster Wellbeing certification, associated with effects of comfort, protection, and emotional well-being.

With a strong intensity and a base rich in woods, resins, immortelle, and vanilla, its longevity is long-lasting, with a prominent trail, especially at the start of the day or evening. It evolves into something softer and more intimate as the hours go by.

Ideal for autumn/winter dinners, dressed-up evenings, introspective moments, or days when you need to feel protected. It can also be worn as a signature fragrance for those who love powerful oriental scents.

One to three sprays are usually enough: on the neck, nape, upper chest, possibly a wrist or the inside of your coat. On clothing (after testing), it will tend to last a very long time. For a more intimate effect, prefer bare skin.

Il n’existe pas encore de recharges dédiées, mais les flacons sont mécaniquement ouvrables, ce qui permet de transvaser du 50 ml vers le 15 ml pour le voyage ou un usage plus nomade.

The fragrance is aiming for vegan certification (currently in progress) and has a natural-origin ingredient content of over 90% (certification also in progress), while staying true to the standards of haute parfumerie.
