Perfumology x Le Jardin retrouvé

We spoke with Nir Guy, a writer specializing in perfumes, an expert in the field, and owner/founder of Perfumology in Philadelphia, USA. We are very pleased to have him as our first retailer in the United States.

What was your first perfume?

My first perfume was Fragonard Concerto at the age of fourteen, an easy citrus scent with a light floral heart that I remember well. I spent a day in Grasse on a tour of Europe with my family when I was in high school, learning more about the world of perfume. The museum gift shop, where I was allowed to choose a gift, was the best part, and Concerto was my choice. My wife and I returned to France last year, and Grasse was exactly as I remembered it. This time, I chose the International Perfume Museum, which was much more suitable for adults.

“My mission is precisely to offer rare and incredible fragrances to our discerning customers. Gin Fizz is a perfect example, one of our best-selling fragrances, which was launched in 1955.”

How did you discover Le Jardin Retrouvé?

We share a wonderful customer who loved Le Jardin Retrouvé and told me about it when she visited one of our events. She really understood what a good perfume was and she knew that I am naturally drawn to family perfumeries. Michel and Clara invited me to their shop when I was in Paris, where they really blew me away.

Their fragrances are fantastic on the skin. I also really enjoyed the part of the visit where I got to experience Clara's laboratory, which transported me to a magical garden. I recommend that people take the time to visit them.

What does perfume mean to you?

Crossing borders. Creating great fragrances requires a global network of suppliers. Our brands and their perfumers come from all over the world, each seeking out the finest ingredients our planet has to offer. When blended together, they become a true art of scent. I used to discover most of my perfumes in Duty Free shops. The brands were almost always European, and wearing them reminded me of my summer travels. Today, I firmly believe in acting locally. Our perfumes and their gift sets are made about half an hour's drive from the store.

What do you think the perfume industry will need in the future?

I would like to see more effort being made in terms of diversity and sustainability. I think our industry can do much better. We offer a variety of brands in our store and manufacture recyclable packaging for perfumes. Small steps that will lead to great progress.
