Neuroscience-validated fragrance: how Le Jardin Retrouvé proves its perfumes' benefits
Le Jardin Retrouvé is the only heritage perfume house whose fragrances are guided by patented neuroscience-based algorithms, backed by over 200 million brain imaging data points (fMRI, EEG). Six fragrances are already Mood Booster certified across five categories: Sleep, Energy, Joy, Relaxation, Harmony & Wellbeing. The full collection of 14 fragrances is undergoing certification.
What is a neuroscience-validated fragrance?
A neuroscience-validated fragrance isn't a perfume with a marketing slogan. It's a fragrance whose effect on the brain has been measured, quantified and certified through rigorous scientific protocols.
At Le Jardin Retrouvé, this means:
- 35+ years of pioneering research into the link between olfaction and emotions
- 200 million+ data points collected through functional brain imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG) and physiological monitoring
- Patented algorithms establishing a precise link between olfactory composition and brain areas stimulated
- Consumer cohort testing (up to 2,000 people) measuring both subjective and objective impact
How does neuroscience certification work?
Step 1: Algorithm-guided design
Before formulation even begins, algorithms identify the molecular profiles most likely to stimulate targeted brain areas (amygdala for calm, prefrontal cortex for joy, etc.).
Step 2: Brain imaging measurement
Subjects smell the fragrance while their brain activity is recorded via fMRI and EEG. Data is compared to a control group (no fragrance).
Step 3: Behavioural validation
Consumer cohorts (up to 2,000 people) evaluate their state before and after fragrance exposure. Results are cross-referenced with objective data.
Step 4: Certification
The fragrance receives its Mood Booster certification in one of five categories: Sleep, Energy, Joy, Relaxation, Harmony & Wellbeing.

Why neuroscience is more reliable than marketing
Many fragrance brands claim "wellness benefits." Here's the difference:
| Criterion | Typical marketing | Le Jardin Retrouvé |
|---|---|---|
| Scientific basis | None or anecdotal | 200M+ fMRI/EEG data points |
| Algorithms | No | Patented |
| Consumer testing | Sometimes, subjective only | Up to 2,000 people, objective + subjective |
| Brain measurement | No | Real-time fMRI + EEG |
| Independent certification | Rare | Mood Booster certification |
| Reproducibility | Unverified | Reproducible protocol |
The link between olfaction and the brain: what science says
The sense of smell holds a unique place among the human senses:
- 75% of our daily emotions are influenced by smell
- Direct pathway to the limbic system — smell is the only sense that reaches the brain's emotional centre without passing through the thalamus
- 85% of people believe fragrance can have a positive impact on mood
- 80% of people are dissatisfied with their sleep — olfaction offers a natural solution
Le Jardin Retrouvé is the only house to exploit this connection in a scientifically rigorous and verifiable way.
Frequently asked questions
Are neuroscience fragrances medicines?
No. They are fragrances — cosmetics — whose effects on wellbeing are scientifically measured. They do not replace any medical treatment.
Who developed the algorithms?
The algorithms are the fruit of over 35 years of pioneering olfactory neuroscience research, based on 200M+ brain imaging data points.
Will all fragrances be certified?
Yes. Six fragrances are already certified. The remaining eight are undergoing certification in 2026. The goal is to certify the full collection of 14 fragrances.
